IAM District 250 organizes Kal Tire workers in four British Columbia locations

Burnaby, BC — IAM District 250 has successfully organized Kal Tire workers from three locations in British Columbia—Grimmer Street (Burnaby), Clark Drive, and Boundary Road (Vancouver)—into its existing union certification. Workers launched the organizing drive in response to financial concerns and inadequate support from their employer. These three led to workers at a fourth location joining the IAM.

Business Representative Al Cyr met with the lead contact from Grimmer Street to address these issues, which were echoed by workers at other locations. Cyr, along with Business Representative Dale Gentile, agreed to organise all three locations simultaneously. After gathering enough support from workers, the union filed for certification with the B.C. Labour Relations Board (BCLRB). Despite attempts by the employer to discourage unionisation, the workers voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining the IAM.

The success at these locations inspired interest at another Kal Tire store on Ontario Street, leading to more workers joining the IAM. A swift organizing effort resulted in 100% support from Ontario Street workers, and the BCLRB upheld their inclusion into the existing certification.

With approximately 50 new members added to IAM Local 1857, collective bargaining is now underway to secure improved working conditions. Cyr and Gentile remain focused on organizing more Kal Tire locations and advancing the rights of all workers through contract negotiations.
